The Historic District Planning & Zoning Committee is thrilled to offer an intimate introduction to the House of Glunz, another of the great pubs with a storied history. Join us to hear the proprietors speak about the history of the establishment. Learn what it was like in the 1800s and how it weathered Prohibition. See the tasting room! The HDPZ may provide some brief context about the role of alcohol in the development of Chicago. Everyone is invited to mingle in the main tavern for a cash bar following the presentations/discussions.
The House of Glunz legacy began in 1888 when Louis Glunz Sr. journeyed from Westphalia, Germany to what is now known as the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago. His relationships with buyers, sellers and producers—distilled from hard work and trusted handshakes—are valued generations later and create the foundation for their distinctive collections.
Today, proprietors Barbara Glunz-Donovan and Christopher Donovan are proud that to stand as the oldest wine shop still owned by the same family in Chicago – and the entire United States.
